Frequently Asked Questions

How did Full Radius Dance evolve?

Founded in 1990 by Artistic/Executive Director Douglas Scott, the organization, originally known as Dance Force, Inc., began as a professional, able-bodied modern dance company. Rehearsals began in January of 1991, and the premiere concert was presented on June 22, 1991. In 1993, through a partnership with Very Special Arts Georgia, Shepherd Center, and Special Audiences, Mr. Scott began teaching classes for persons with physical disabilities. His interest in working with this population lead to the creation of the physically integrated (dancers with and without disabilities) dance company E=motion, which Mr. Scott co-founded with Ardath Prendergast in 1995. Although included under the Dance Force, Inc. banner, E=motion was operated separately from the able-bodied company Dance Force until the feasibility of this new, and bold, venture was determined. The company soon thrived. In 1998, E=motion merged with Dance Force to create Full Radius Dance.

Is physically integrated dance a new art form?

The field of physically integrated (dancers with and without disabilities), or mixed ability dance, is, by most standards, a relatively young art form, but is gaining recognition and acceptance. In a report presented to the National Council on the Arts, dated March 3, 2000, Douglas C. Sontag stated "At some point in the mid-1980's, wheelchair dance or mixed ability dance companies began to emerge in both the United States and Britain. What began some 15 years ago as a small movement has developed into an exciting and distinguished sector of the professional dance field . . . However, seeing an entirely new form of expression develop in any discipline is a relatively rare phenomenon.

Are there other physically-integrated dance companies in the United States?

Yes! Here are a few:
Axis Dance Company (Oakland, CA)
Dancing Wheels (Cleveland, OH)
Dance Detour (Chicago, IL)
Infinity Dance Theatre (New York, NY)
Light Motion (Seattle, WA)
